Julie Spivey is a designer and design educator who spends an inordinate amount of time thinking about letterforms, hierarchy, and how visual structure shapes understanding. She is Professor of Graphic Design in the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia,

Her practice centers on typographic systems, publication design, identity development, and information visualization. She is drawn to projects that require translating complex content (making order of chaos.) Spivey’s interest in visual communication began studying journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She later persued an MFA in Communication Arts from East Carolina University, where typography grew into an enduring preoccupation.

She believes in good hierarchy, will not tolerate fake quote marks, and maintains that lowercase double-decker old style g is the superior letterform.
